Singapore: Hummerstons

21 Mar

Hummerstons at Robertson Walk is a chic American cafe opened by the ex-executive chef of PS Cafe. It seemed quite popular on HGW and I read that they actually serve Canadian poutine (!!!) which I’ve not seen in Singapore. I paid a visit one weekday lunch to see what the fuss was about.

Al fresco seating area where we sat

Indoor seating area. Loved the upholstered sofas!

The coffee here is supplied by Papa Palheta so you know it can’t go worng. I had an iced cafe latte ($5.50).

I have a love affair with poutine after doing my student exchange in Canada. I love fries, but fries with gravy and cheese is just 10 times better. Hummerstons does gourmet versions of poutinethe Montreal style poutine (fries with foie gras, Swiss emmenthal, mushrooms, gravy) ($19.80) was quite delectable but the foie gras was just a peripheral ingredient here. It isn’t exactly the real deal as they don’t use the squeaky cheese curds used in poutine, but apparently that can’t be imported into Singapore so a substitute is necessary.

I was so excited to see Californian fish tacos ($24) on the menu as I’ve always wanted to try fish tacos. The fish pieces were tempura battered, plied with slaw tossed in a herb and chipotle lime cream and nestled in crispy corn tortillas that tasted like giant chips. Interesting summery flavours but it was on the whole, a little lacking for me – maybe I had too high expectations of fish tacos. I thought more slaw and flavour would give the dish much more oomph. It’s a very small portion too so don’t order this if you’re starving.

The Hummerstons brunch burger served with fries and a chilli tomato aioli ($26) did not disappoint. Made with with the whole works (USDA beef, smoked applewood bacon, oak smoked cheddar, mushrooms, tomatoes, fried egg), this was indeed pretty delish. The meat patty was of discernibly better quality than your usual. Bonus: they also thoughtfully divided the burger into four for the three of us though we didn’t request. Now that’s service.

I thought the roasted pumpkin cheesecake ($11.90) was fantastic! The pumpkin was mixed with rosemary and I loved that sweet and savoury pairing. Served with vanilla cream made with real vanilla pods (as you can see) and a little piece of almond brittle.

I quite enjoyed the chill vibe and setting of Hummerstons as it’s hidden in a corner on the second floor of the Robertson Walk complex, far from the madding crowd. Food ranged from decent to pretty good and the menu has some interesting options lesser seen in Singapore that agrees with me. Prices were also quite reasonable compared to say, PS Cafe. Wouldn’t mind going back to try out more items on the menu. They also do a weekend brunch.
