Shanghai: Cafe Godiva

22 Nov

Met some of the hub’s friends at Cafe Godiva on a rainy Saturday afternoon for a catch up session. Though I’m not too big a fan of chain type cafes, his friends picked the place for convenience. The cafe (on the 2nd floor) was quite cosy and tastefully done up but was also completely full and we had to sit outdoors (with shelter). Interestingly there was also a bar in the cafe which I thought was a cool touch. There was a huge variety of cakes, desserts, dinks and chocolates on the menu and on the display cases but since we were both bursting at the seams from brunch at Boxing Cat and were saving our bellies for my birthday meal later, we settled for some hot chocolate.

I got the classic hot dark chocolate (45 RMB). It was rich but not overtly so, unlike the one at Laduree, Paris which I can’t stomach more than half a cup. After trying a fair sample of good hot chocolates around the world (Angelina in Paris, KoKo Black in Melbourne, Spanish ones etc.), it has come to a point that I expect the good ones to more or less taste the same, granted they are made with good dark chocolate and are not watered down or too thick and creamy.

The adventurous hubs got the hot chili dark chocolate (45 RMB). We thought the chili flakes were only sprinkled on the top but we were wrong! The chili flavour permeated every bit of the chocolate drink and was very spicy that both the husband and I got caught off guard. The hubs derived a weird kick from his drink and felt that the pairing of chilli and chocolate as invented by the Aztecs was sheer genius. Only for the adventurous and those with high chili tolerance :)

I should probably come back to try their desserts and see what’s the fuss about. Then again it could be just the prestige of the brand which is pretty luxurious in China – a piece of chocolate is almost 5 SGD (probably because of import tax) , while you can get a bowl of noodles off the street for 50 cents.
