Beijing: Xiao Wang Fu 小王府

2 Aug

The husband’s Beijing based colleagues brought us to Xiao Wang Fu 小王府 to try local homestyle cooking. We liked it so much that we came back a second time ourselves on our trip. This time, we went to the more scenic branch in Ritan Park for lunch and snagged the al fresco seats overlooking old Beijingers practising taichi on the park’s manicured lawns.

We ate at Da Dong the day before, but I had to order Peking duck (half duck) again since we are in Beijing after all. Though it wasn’t as cripsy, lean and refined as Da Dong’s Peking duck, I could smell the sweet fruit wood aroma on the duck and it was definitely more than respectable. In fact it was good in a rustic, home-cooking way.

These deep fried spiced pork ribs were coated with the spices used in Xinjiang skewers and were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. You can order them by piece.

We also could not resist the ultimate comfort food, stir fried eggplant, which makes a great accompaniment to rice.

They also do a mean steamed dumplings with juicy and tasty fillings of minced pork, mushrooms, etc. and enjoyed with a dash of black vinegar.

But the real reason why I came back a second time was because of the deep fried apple fritters, my new favourite Chinese dessert. It was love at first bite. It’s essentially chopped apples, wrapped in a glutinous flour, deep fried, coated in a hot maltose syrup and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Served immediately to the table, you have to dip them in a bowl of iced water so that the maltose syrup would solidify and form a crispy sugar coating. Best enjoyed when they are still hot, so you get the explosive gush of apple in your mouth. Where have you been all 25  years of my life?

I refrain from posting pictures of myself in my entries, but this is the only one I had that could show the al fresco area we were sitting in. Isn’t it just lovely? Pardon the greedy and stuffed face. :)

Price: $-$$ (250-350 RMB for 2 pax at the Ritan Park branch) | Locations: I went to 2 branches – 1) Inside the north gate of Ritan Park, Chaoyang & 2) Bldg 2, Guanghua Lu Dongli, Chaoyang District | Website: http://www.xiaowanghome.com/english/main.htm
